Marvin Zimmerman told me he was going to have to miss the annual picnic of the Central New York Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge last week at Veterans Memorial Park, Gillie Lake, in Camillus. Marv has prostate cancer and had a doctor's appointment.
So, I was surprised when I got to the peaceable pavilion on the lake and there was Marv, his cane hooked over the edge of the picnic table. He's 87 years old and recently lost his wife of 63 years, Jane. He lives alone in Liverpool and says Jane's death left a big void in his life.
