Estrogen Found to Not Affect Heart Disease, Breast Cancer
The NIH has halted the estrogen-alone wing of the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) a year before its scheduled end. The 11,000 postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy and were enrolled in the estrogen-alone trial recently received a letter informing them of the preliminary results of the study and asking them to stop their study medication. After nearly 7 years of follow-up it appears that estrogen alone does not affect the rates of heart disease or breast cancer (either positively or negatively), both key findings of the estrogen/progesterone wing of the study, which was halted in July 2002.
