WAS it the promise of a cheap kitchen appliance or a free chocolate bar that lured the masses to wait outside the new shop during the early hours of last Friday? Certainly the first 999 customers to enter Britain's 99th 99p Store received a large Toblerone, while the first 99 were offered the chance to purchase a microwave for the meagre sum of 99p.
Some people will do almost anything for a bargain, lurking like vultures around the mark-down aisle of the supermarket, ready to pounce on a packet of eight sausages reduced to 15p even though they only went in for some loo roll.
