IT WAS once the most unpretentious of Irish family holidays, then it became the butt of jokes and it fell out of fashion in the Celtic Tiger years as discerning holidaymakers travelled abroad for more aspirational and expensive foreign vacations.

But now it's back in vogue as cost-conscious consumers look to pare back their spending - yes, the much-maligned Irish holiday village is enjoying a welcome renaissance.

Trabolgan Holiday Village, in Midleton, Co. Cork, for example, has reported a bumper summer season as 'staycationers' opt to beat the credit crunch by holidaying on a budget.
