Can religion orchestrate unity? While many religious leaders around the world seem to hear impossibility in such music, Fred Katz celebrates its mystery. Throughout his long and distinguished career as a composer, arranger, conductor and cellist, the 88-year-old Jewish music maker has subscribed to the belief that "great mystery leads to creativity." Lately--especially with the release of his new CD adaptation of his 1958 Hollywood recording, "Folk Songs for Far Out Folk," Katz, as he explained in a recent interview, has been exploring the "sense of wonderment" in that mystery and its place in Judaism and other religions.
