NEW YORK -- For decades the number of products carried by chain drug stores and other retailers has increased dramatically, but that trend seems to be coming to a screeching halt.
For example, Walgreen Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Rite Aid Corp. and other mass retailers have all initiated aggressive programs to reduce clutter on their shelves.
The trend presents a particular challenge to niche product manufacturers, which must show that the items they offer are in demand by consumers and help make destinations of the retailers they serve.
