For decades, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was demonized by members of the evangelical right who were morally outraged by the personal failings of his earlier life and incensed over his staunch support of abortion and gay rights.
Even within his own beloved Roman Catholic Church, the liberal Democrat felt the wrath, with some calling for his excommunication or ouster from the church body.
