Take the less travelled path off Itanagar and travel to the quaintly named valley of Ziro, to spot the elusive and shy mithun
The mithun's a kind of lumbering cross between the buffalo and the wild gaur. It prefers to keep to itself in the shades of the Talle Valley Sanctuary, 38 km from Ziro. The tribals of the area, the Apatanis, also let the animal be, until there's a wedding, which is when the villagers go mithun-spotting armed with bags of salt to coax one of them into coming home with them. During wedding season outsiders can join these journeys through the mist, the smell of wet earth keeping you company.
