U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei was as clear as he has ever been last week about his standards for a health care reform bill. Any bill must contain a "public option" for health insurance, he said, or he will not support it.
Maffei, who speaks knowledgeably and in depth about the various health care proposals being put forward in Washington, has good reason to insist on a government-run alternative to private health insurance. A publicly run program would provide coverage for millions of uninsured Americans while creating badly needed competition for the private companies.
