THE NUMBER of women dying of cervical cancer is rising and fast exceeding those of HIV/Aids-related deaths in Africa.

One of the reasons is that more effort and resources are being pumped into preventing the spread of Aids, resulting in many women having little or no knowledge of cervical cancer.

KwaZulu-Natal health officials said it was for this reason that a major campaign, "Phila Ma" (be healthy mother), was launched at Amaoti, north of Durban, yesterday to raise awareness of the cancer.
