Recent flooding in the Newlands area has once again brought the policy of felling pine trees on Table Mountain to the fore. Arguments |for and against the policy have appeared in ping-pong fashion in the pages of the Cape Times, supported by polarised views. It is perhaps timely to take a more comprehensive view of the subject.
When the first European settlers arrived at the Cape, they were struck by two features of the landscape. The first was the lack of trees that could provide suitable timber for everyday needs.
