The Islamic Republic has forbidden its airlines to lease any more Russian planes or to buy any used Russian aircraft.
Brand-new Russian aircraft can still be bought from the manufacturers.
The decree, announced by Mohammad-Ali Ilkhani, the chief of the Civil Aviation Organization, does not forbid the purchase of used American- or European-made planes.
Iran cannot buy new Boeings because of American sanctions. Many European planes use American engines and the sale to Iran of such new planes are also barred by U.S. sanctions. But American and European planes can be bought second-hand as airlines shed them for newer models. Iran does buy such ...
