Microsoft has announced the date on which retailers will start selling handsets using version 6.5 of its Windows Mobile operating system. The next generation of what are now called 'Windows phones' will go on sale on 6 October, Microsoft said on Tuesday.

The upgraded phone OS, launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the start of this year, will have a heavily redesigned user interface and will include a new version of the Internet Explorer Mobile browser.
