Officials at Foss Manufacturing in Hampton knew years ago they could save money on energy after conducting an energy audit. The old facility's wiring, installed piecemeal over the years, created bottlenecks when trying to move around gas-generated power, forcing the facility to rely on supplemental diesel. Rewiring it to free up that bottleneck would pay for itself in only a few years.
However, after bouncing back from bankruptcy in 2006, the budget was still tight, and back then there were few opportunities for those that generate their own electricity to finance energy-related improvements.
Those times have changed.
