BHP Billiton says it is committed to easing long-running congestion at the Port of Newcastle and believes coal shippers can help solve the problems plaguing the world's biggest coal export harbour.
The resources giant renewed its commitment following reports of looming chaos at Newcastle, in the NSW Hunter region, after a breakdown in negotiations between the state government and the industry on arrangements for rival coal companies to share the port's overstretched capacity.
