A JPY2 trillion (USD21.5bn) project led by Japan s Aerospace Exploration Agency and trade ministry reportedly plans to develop a 1GW solar energy generating system in space within the next 30 years. A group of 16 companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI Corporation, are participating in the project, which aims to transmit electricity generated on a solar station back to earth in the form of microwaves.
