As the morning-long debate between acequia officials and the Forest Service ended Aug. 26, there appeared to be more understanding between the two groups.

Kendall Clark, supervisor of Carson National Forest, Southwestern Region 3, agreed to explain to her supervisors why the Acequias del Chamisal y Ojito and Llano de San Juan de Nepomuceno in southern Taos County should be allowed to repair the compuerta, or headgate, without having to apply for a special use permit.

These acequias have existed and been maintained by generations of rural Northern New Mexican families ...
