In a couple of months, countless flocks of waterfowl will begin their annual migration down the Rio Grande to wintering grounds in southern New Mexico. Other species will join them -- butterflies, swallows, even the endangered Southwest willow flycatchers.
They will follow the course of the river valley, stopping off to rest and refuel. Just south of Monte Vista is a major stopover, where birds feed off farmers' fields for several weeks before taking off to complete the next couple of hundred miles in one swoop.
