The seven sets of small furry feet kicked up quite a sandstorm as they scampered across the desert before disappearing deep underground amid a cacophony of noise. The meerkats had spotted the brown snake eagle now soaring over our heads when it was miles away, long before it reached our particular patch of the Kalahari.
'Quickly,' said Chabba, my safari guide, indicating the dusty exit point from which the meerkats would emerge. 'Sit down there.' Wincing as sharp stones dug into my backside, I placed myself down close to the burrow's opening, and then froze as seven pointed snouts suddenly poked en masse out of the hole.
