RAMADI: Eight people were killed and 15 wounded on Monday in a suicide car bomb attack on a security checkpoint in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, a former Al-Qaeda stronghold, police said.
Police Major Fawzi Hamad said three policemen were among the dead and the others were civilians. Among the wounded were three children and two women, he said.
Ramadi lies about 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad. The blast also set half a dozen cars ablaze, Hamad said. Police checkpoints are a favorite target of insurgents seeking to show that Iraqi security forces are unable to keep people safe as U.S. troops gradually draw down.
