In parallel, a water rights battle over the historic Tigris and Euphrates rivers simmered on Sept. 3, as Iraq and Syria appealed for increased water flows to cope with severe drought. But Turkey, the source of these rivers, said it was already too over-stretched.
Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said Turkey's south-eastern region was suffering from low rainfall and drought. But he added that his country was releasing more water than it was legally obligated to out of humanitarian concerns.
