In 2006 Statistics New Zealand was invited to take part in an international working group, convened by the OECD and some other UN and international statistical bodies, to look at ways to gather truly meaningful sustainable development statistics.

The purpose of the statistics is to measure how we're doing in a different way from what the 1950s era would have perceived as 'progress'. The definition of sustainable development used has been "... development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
