The Clinton Administration's Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles is investing about $500 million per year--including about $250 million in federal funds. American automakers are sinking over $1 billion per year in "green car research." Auto shows in Detroit and Tokyo have showed off several alternative fuel systems and Lee Iacocca has come out of retirement to develop and market light electric vehicles, such as a golf cart capable of 25 miles per hour.
