WHEN JIM HIGHTOWER speaks, people listen. Unfortunately, not enough people get to hear him speak. He's a populist, which means he is definitely not in the mainstream of political thought. Hightower served as a Texas state official for a time, handled chores for a liberal U.S. senator, and made enough noise on behalf of workers and farmers to attract the attention of the Democratic Party, which invited him to speak at a national convention, thereby evoking a touch of nostalgia for a philosophy long abandoned by both national political parties.
