Charges have been dropped against a Turkish teenager who cursed Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, officials said.

A juvenile court ruled Tuesday that Erdogan, visiting the city of Aydin in the days before March 29 local elections, was functioning as head of the Justice and Development Party, usually known by its Turkish initials AKP, not as prime minister, Bianet reported. That made the charge of publicly defaming an official moot.

Investigators say the 13-year-old, identified only as M.S.O., walked beside Erdogan's car and said, God damn you. The boy said Erdogan squeezed his throat when security guards brought him to the prime minister.
