When retired Episcopal bishop Walter Righter was about to be charged with heresy for ordaining a gay man who was in a relationship, he broke the news to the parishioners at the small Vermont church where he attended services. He was surprised to find that the churchgoers were far less conservative than he had imagined. "There were 85-year-old Vermont people really trying to be supportive of me," Righter recalled. "The whole thing was a great big symbol of what I'm talking about. The instincts of the people are way ahead of the institution, and the institution has to catch up with those instincts."
