IN THE old days, astrologers used something called an 'ephemeris'. This provided daily 'noon' positions for every planet. If we wanted, say, a 9.33am reading, we'd take the noon position for that day, subtract the noon position for the previous day and, using an abacus (oh, all right, a calculator) we'd divide up that difference. Among other things, these books would tell us when Mercury, the communication planet, was retrograde. Now we don't need them. We don't even need computers. One look at the news tells us. A postal strike? Then Mercury must be retrograde. As indeed, it is now.
