In the past few years, Germany has emerged as a strong market for U.S. wines. In 1997, the value of bottled wine from California shipped to Germany was $22.1 million, which put it third behind the United Kingdom and Canada. When considering all wine shipments, Germany ranked fourth in terms of value and fifth in terms of volume. Compared to 1996, the value of wine exported to Germany was up 26%, while volume grew only 3% to 10.6 million liters. (To convert liters to gallons, multiply by .264.) Five years ago, in 1993, Euromonitor reported shipments of U.S. wine to Germany at only 1.4 million liters.
