A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to exclude the region from Britain s high-speed rail revolution was dismissed by the Government yesterday.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis insisted a central aspect in building a 225mph line must be speeding journeys across the Pennines, linking the North-East and North Yorkshire to Manchester and Liverpool.

The pledge means Lord Adonis has already rejected Network Rail s proposal, made last month, to build a single high-speed line up the West Coast to Scotland, at a cost of [pounds sterling]34bn.
