Jun. 2--Network Associates Inc. on Monday settled a string of patent infringement and contract lawsuits over data-scrambling software with RSA Data Security Inc. The deal paves the way for the rivals to be partners in some areas and frees Network Associates from the threat of new litigation as it continues a four-year acquisition spree.

The legal battles arose from a dispute between RSA and its bitter rival in the market for "encryption" software, Pretty Good Privacy Inc., which Network Associates acquired last year. The suits had cast a shadow over one of Network Associates' recent acquisitions and on the company's ability ...
