Peru will build a cargo railway by 2019 to carry minerals from copper, gold and phosphate mines to the Bayovar port, President Alan Garcia said.

The $1 billion railway will carry 4 million tons a year from Newmont Mining Corp. and Gold Fields Ltd. gold mines and copper projects being developed by Rio Tinto Group and Anglo American Plc in the northern Andean region of Cajamarca, Garcia told reporters after meeting with company officials in Lima.

This railway will add 2 percent to annual GDP, create 500,000 jobs and carry 1 million tons of supplies such as fuel back to the mines, Garcia said today. The companies, regional ...
