The police arrived at Jean and Edward McNeill's door at 7 o'clock on a Sunday morning. The night before, their teenage daughter Erin had stayed at a friend's house. There had been a fire, explained the officers. Erin was alive but in intensive care.
'It's hard to explain the feeling of utter horror,' recalls Jean, 50. 'It was like the breath had been sucked out of me.' The couple from Clackmannanshire, rushed to Stirling Royal Infirmary, where Erin was being treated. 'She was covered right up to her neck and was unconscious, with a machine helping her breathe.
