FIDE Master Hussain Ayyad and rising youngster Sara Al Afoo, both of Bahrain, were crowned champions in the 17th Al Mardi Open Chess Championship, played at Al Ahli Club in Mahooz.
Ayyad lifted the seniors' division crown after finishing with six-and-a-half points out of seven games; while Sara prevailed in her final round match to seal the youth division title by a single point.
Ayyad won over Gregorio Bilang of the Philippines in his last match to put him a step closer to the title. He then needed to wait for the result of the tie between Moroccan International Master Mohammed Tissir and Filipino Anthony Pelayo of Shaheen Group Company.
