WINSTON-SALEM - Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Robert Franke Steidtmann, 93, died Sept. 11, 2009.
He was born in Madison, Wis., on Aug. 10, 1916, to Bertha and Edward Steidtmann. Robert Steidtmann graduated from VMI in 1938, and accepted an immediate commission into the United States Marine Corps. During World War II, he fought with the Third Marine Division on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Guam, and afterwards served in occupied Japan, and was in the Seventh Marine Service Regiment in Tsingtau, China. He fought with the First Marine Division in the Korean War where he won the Legion of Merit with valor for "Exceptionally Meritorious Conduct." During the Cold War, Col. ...
