In a quiet display of integrity at a 2007 Sea-Tac town meeting, Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., stood up to and disputed leather-lunged left activists who wanted Congress to launch impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
Repudiation of extremists on your side of the fence is a test of character for those in public life.
Some fail the test. I've watched Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., nod seriously at blame-America broadsides from the loony left. In contrast, conservative pundit William F. Buckley, in National Review, denounced the John Birch Society and lampooned its claim that Dwight Eisenhower was a conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.
