A global food supply coupled with demand for healthier, minimally processed foods present greater food safety challenges.
Although the U.S. boasts one of the safest food supplies, government and industry are continually working to develop regulations, prevention systems and processing techniques that will ensure even safer food in each segment of the industry.
The Clinton Administration's 1999 fiscal year budget proposal for the FDA includes $74 million for the President's Food Safety Initiative, which is $50 million more than the current budget authorized for the FDA's role in this program.
