The battle between the world's largest sockeye salmon stocks and its potentially largest gold and copper mine shifted from media campaigns to the courthouse with the July 29 filing of a lawsuit that would cancel all exploration and water use permits for the Pebble Project, upstream of Alaska's Bristol Bay.
Trustees for Alaska filed the suit on behalf of five state residents, including former first lady Bella Hammond, and a group of eight Native village corporations in the Bristol Bay region.
