Updated 12:48 p.m.: A Microsoft spokesperson said the companies have been in informal talks with the EU for two months.

Microsoft and Yahoo have started informal talks with European Union antitrust regulators about their proposed search and advertising deal, Reuters reports.
Indications at this point are that the talks are exploratory, and that the EU does not yet have competition concerns. Since the companies announced their deal in July, Microsoft has said it would need approval by U.S. and EU regulators.
Such approval is not expected until early 2010, at the soonest.
