There are digital presses and there are conventional presses. And then there's a hybrid marked by versatility and profits.
The direct imaging press market showed its first rumblings in 1991, with the debut of the Heidelberg GTO-DI, since discontinued. Today, the market has grown to include the Quickmaster DI, also from Heidelberg, and the Omni-Adast 705C DI, both of which use Presstek imaging technology.
At the Drupa 2000 exposition in Germany, the number of press vendors manufacturing direct-to-press systems is expected to at least double as the Scitex/KBAPlaneta 74 Karat press and Goss's Adopt/CP system hit the market.
