The Navy this week detailed a new winner-take-all competition to build its family of warships for operating close to shores around the world.
The winner, to be announced in 2010, would build 10 warships through 2015 and provide the design that would become the baseline for the entire 55-ship fleet of Littoral Combat Ships.
Teams led by Lockheed Martin Corp. and General Dynamics Corp. have contracts for the first four vessels. The Navy, after soliciting bids for the next three, pulled back the bids because the proposed prices were too high, Navy officials said Wednesday .
