Good governance of maritime affairs can be a key to sustainable growth in coastal zones and address common issues of concern. Improved governance could particularly be a driver in the Mediterranean, a semi-closed sea surrounded by EU member states and third countries and faced with multiple challenges. The European Commission therefore proposes, in a communication(1) adopted on 11 September, to promote good maritime governance in the form of an "EU strategy to improve maritime governance in the Mediterranean Sea through an integrated maritime policy".
