London's June season sprang a shock: the announcement on 18 June by hoteliers J.W. Marriott, owners of the Grosvenor House Hotel, that they would no longer host the eponymous art and antiques fair, which had been staged there for 75 years. The decision had little to do with the success of the fair; in fact, this year's event saw increased visitor numbers and unexpectedly strong sales (Fig. 5). Costs had risen, sponsorship was down, and it seems that the hotel seeks to maximise the revenue from Europe's largest ballroom by staging more events; the week-long fair takes the room out of commission for three weeks.
