A year after the resumption of direct negotiations, the President of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, started, on 10 September, the second crucial phase of negotiations with the aim of reuniting the island. Passing through Brussels, on 15 September, Talat said in an interview with Europolitics that these "last-chance" negotiations must be speeded up in order to reach an agreement in the coming months. The most sensitive issue remains that of the properties of Greek Cypriots occupied by Turkish Cypriots.a
