Eduardo Chillida, Jorge de Oteiza, Agustin Ibarrola and Nestor Basterretxea are the masters of Basque modernism. As the Basque Country's leading artists during a period of nearly 30 years -- roughly from the mid-'50s to the mid-'80s -- their preeminence was such that their art became closely linked to, indeed emblematic of, modern Basque cultural identity. Yet despite the impressive scope of their accomplishments, their work is all but absent from Basque museums. Except in Chillida's case, exhibition catalogues are few and far between, and those that can be found are outdated and filled with errors and inferior-quality reproductions.
