I called my publisher, Verso, the other day and found its executive director, Colin Robinson, exuberant over the success of its 150th anniversary edition of Marx and Engels's Communist Manifesto. He'd already sent me the sleek little book with its introduction by Eric Hobsbawm. I told him waspishly it looked like an espresso table book, or maybe a latte table book, though I love Komar and Melamid's romantic red flag on the cover, subversive and defiant.
Robinson wasn't irked at all. He said Verso had already sold 22,000 copies. The publicity had been gratifying. He'd nearly persuaded Barneys to do a window display of fashionable models, all with copies of the ...
