A bastion of Bay State betting history went dark last night, after the last dog bolted across the finish line at Wonderland Greyhound Park and the struggling track finally fell to fiscal woes and a looming voter-approved dog-racing ban.
"It's the end of an era," said former State Racing Commission Chairman Jack McGee. "One of the first dates I ever went on with my wife was at Wonderland Park. It's a sad day."
Once one of the most prolific and profitable racetracks in the country, Wonderland has suffered from dwindling fans and seen its daily handle - the amount bet at the track - plummet from as high as $1 ...
