DEET is the most effective and best studied insect repellent on the market, according to Mark S. Fradin, M.D., who has reviewed all relevant research from peer-reviewed journals, entomology texts, and government and industry reports. This substance has a remarkable safety profile after 40 years of worldwide use, wrote Dr. Fradin, but toxic reactions can occur (usually when the product is misused). His findings, published in a recent issue of Annals of Internal Medicine (1 June 1998), are excerpted below.
