Development of noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) has resulted from several new techniques studying free fetal nucleic acids, which may allow a diagnosis of certain fetal conditions by taking blood from the mother. In special circumstances, the NHS has used this new technology in determining rhesus status of the fetus in rhesus disease and determining fetal sex in sex-linked conditions.
