The UK has adopted new measurements based on breastfed babies to plot children's growth.
They replace measures based mainly on children fed with formula milk and aim to make breastfeeding the norm providing reassurances for parents of breastfed babies, who are likely to gain weight more slowly.
They include parent-friendly instructions and a chart specifically for premature babies. As babies can lose and gain weight at different rates between birth and two weeks, it is recommended that they are not measured during this time.
The charts also help make more reliable predictions of a child's adult height.
