The Green Party has published A green new deal for the NHS (Green Party, 2009) and as a part of it is calling for 'radical improvements' in maternity care. The party wants to see a wider range of choices open to pregnant women, including home births for those who want them. In 2007, only 2.8% of births in England took place at home, according to figures on the BirthChoiceUK website at: www birthchoiceuk.com
The party wants to see all women entitled to support from a single midwife throughout pregnancy, and a major recruitment drive for midwives. They are also calling for a significant reduction in the amount of medical interventions.
